CBD is one of the 113 cannabinoid compounds present in hemp and marijuana plants, which come under the family Cannabis. For thousands of years, people were using cannabis for alleviating many health problems that affect the human body, including pain. After the discovery of CBD in the year 1940, it is now known that CBD along with other cannabinoids gave the cannabis plant its therapeutic properties.
CBD is mainly extracted from the hemp plant even though it is also present in the marijuana plant. This is mainly because only hemp-derived CBD is legal in the United States and the THC content in hemp-derived products is well under the legal limit.
Today, people are using different types of CBD products to alleviate their body aches. Let’s take a look at how CBD alleviates different types of pain that affects the human body.
CBD For Arthritis Pain Relief
Arthritis is very common in older adults that cause inflammations in the joints. This inflammatory disorder will lead to severe pain in the joints and eventually cause disability if not treated properly. There are over 100 different types of arthritis that affect humans and among them, Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis are the most common ones.
The common symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Loss of appetite is also experienced in severe cases of Rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis may lead to joint deformity if not treated properly and most of the current treatment methods for RA are ineffective.
Recent studies are showing positive results of the use of CBD oil for pain caused by different types of arthritis. CBD’s interaction with the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors present in the endocannabinoid system helps to reduce the inflammations in the joints and thereby alleviates the pain associated with it.
A 2016 study conducted on rats with arthritis shows the effect of CBD in alleviating this inflammatory disorder. During the study, the rats were administered with a dosage of CBD for four days. After the time period, the researchers observed that the inflammation level in the rat’s joints reduced significantly. It was observed that the rats that received different amounts of CBD also showed similar results.
CBD For Migraine
Even though the studies on the use of CBD for migraine relief are limited, there are several anecdotal records of CBD users that show the benefits of using CBD for getting relief from the headaches. Migraines are the recurring headaches that cause pain on one side of the head. It affects people of all ages and may last for a few hours to a few days.
In a recent two-phase study conducted by the European Academy of Neurology, the researchers looked at the combined effect of CBD and THC on migraine relief. A combination of CBD and THC was administered to 48 people with chronic migraines during the first phase of the study. The test subject received an oral dose of 100mg.
This dosage did not create any significant effect on the subjects. When the dosage was increased to 200mg, a 55% reduction in acute headaches was observed. In the second phase, a daily dose of 200 mg of a combination of THC and CBD were given to people suffering from cluster headaches. A 40.4 % reduction in the migraine attacks on the test subjects were observed after the treatment period.
CBD For Cancer Treatment
It is important to note that CBD is not conclusively proven as an effective remedy for cancer. However, CBD is being used as a complementary medication for the side effects of cancer treatment and also for alleviating pain caused by cancer. Cancer is caused by the rapid growth of abnormal cells in our body. it may spread to other vital internal organs and threaten your life.
Severe pain is one of the common symptoms in some form of cancer. Also, cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy can cause side effects like pain, nausea, insomnia, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. and CBD is proven to have therapeutic properties that will alleviate these side effects.
In 2010, a study looked at the effects of CBD on alleviating cancer-related pain. The study observed that cancer patients who received CBD experienced a significant reduction in pain. Many oncologists are now recommending CBD products like CBD gummies, CBD tincture, etc. to the patients undergoing cancer treatment.
CBD For Sciatica
Sciatica or Sciatic nerve pain is the intense pain that radiates along the pathway of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve covers your lower back, buttocks, hips, and legs. A number of factors will trigger sciatica that includes bone spur, spinal stenosis, or a herniated disk.
Since CBD for pain relief is very effective, doctors are now suggesting the use of CBD for treating sciatic nerve pain. CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce the neuropathic pain associated with sciatica. CBD is very effective for sciatica than most of the anti-inflammatory drugs because it does not cause any severe side effects.
